Does this ad go a little too far?

Manhattan Mini Storage ad on the West Side Highway at or about 42nd st. For those who doen't know, Manhattan Mini Storage has been running a campaign of clever ads that, well, sometimes push the boundaries of taste. (EG: "Your closet is more shallow than Paris Hilton," with a picture of a lap dog wearing a tiara.)

But boy, even I'm not sure if this one hasn't crossed a line. I mean, jeeze.

It's about time

I'm very pleased that the erosion of reproductive rights is getting public exposure - by whatever means necessary.

Sign of the times

I'm constantly stunned by how many people advocate the slaughter of helpless little babies. The killing of human babies has to be the most selfish evil a person can commit. The problem is that there have been several American generations raised with no concept of responsibility for ones actions. Now it's to the point of murdering millions of babies (50+ MILLION since Roe vs. Wade, mostly black babies) just to escape the consequences of their actions. To call it disgusting is an understatement in terms. Now I understand their are situations of rape and health issues, but why extend capital punishment to an innocent, helpless child that had no choice in the matter!?

@ blaircl - If it's so difficult for you to see the bodies of the dead babies, why do you advocate their murder?

Thank YOU!!! God Bless you..

Thank YOU!!! God Bless you.. for standing up for the TRUTH!! .. Still I think there is something positive about this... they know The end is near for them.. so YES!! their space is shrinking..enough of this CRUELTY. We are about to STOP this Horrible Holocaust.. BE CORAGEOUS... it seems hard to do.. but with GOD anything is possible..WE CAN turn this country around.. and make it the beautiful America it once was.. with Family and Moral values..

@ Anonymous who posted "It's about time"
reproductive rights? No one is preventing them from reproducing. Why do you not call it what it is? It's murder plain and simple. Does the word "reproductive rights" make you feel better about yourself?

Oh, and in response to the advertisement. It's abominable!

Sorry for the triple post

I'm sorry for the triple post (including this one), my bad. I only intended the second one.

Have a good day.

Not to say that I don't have one, but I don't see where I espoused a belief one way or another on abortion. No offense, but I think you're reading far too much persecution into messages.

At the same time, the image could have been a machine gun, and the quote "Your closet space is shrinking faster than Tupac's enemies" and I still wouldn't call it abominable, just in questionable taste.

BTW, Manhattan Mini Storage, if you wanna use that, go right ahead. I just want a little credit ;-).

Very simple. All

Very simple.

All pro-abortion people think an unborn child is not a person; so it's ok to kill it (or rather, prevent it from receive life support).

All anti-abortion people think otherwise, so they cannot accept any decision which involves killing, unless it's life or death fr the mother...

If I have a worthless brother-n-law living at my expense, is it ok for me to kill him? You know, even if he leaves my house, he's bount to become a criminal, for he could never get himself a honest life... why not spare the cops the hassle?

Because this is murder .

30 years of Reaganoid proto-fascism....

and we are concerned with an ad that speaks truth to power?

Wake up, my fellow sheep: American democracy is shrinking fast and we are called to be defenders of Liberty, not corporate power and certainly not to grab the resources (read: oil and water) of sovereign countries!

get over it

Just about everything these days is in 'bad taste' to someone or another. Our government is in bad taste, what with all the murdering of the already-born Iraqis and whatnot. Kid-targeted TV advertising is in 'bad taste' because it pulverizes their imaginations, gives them ADD, makes them fat, and later in their lives, screws with their values ('$ > everything else'). Rap music is in 'bad taste' because it advocates misogyny, drugs, and gang violence. People complain, argue, voice their opinion, take stands. Which is fine, because everyone essentially wants the world to be something other than the craphole it is today - no matter how far up their rear ends their heads are lodged. It's just that some things are more important to fight for than others. Whether some billboard in Manhattan is too edgy is definitely not one of them. Get over yourselves.

A good fundie always

A good fundie always remembers, life begins at conception and ends at birth. By god they had better be forced to have that baby, but once it's born, no way in hell are we going to help support it with social programs.

That ad makes me want to have an abortion right now.

.. Damn i don't have a womb.

I'm kinda confused.... how is this ad related to abortions?

*shrugs* maybe it's some news that i just didn't hear

An Anonymous Foxy's picture

It's 'going too far' to

It's 'going too far' to display a poster with the actual results of an abortion? I'd like to know how you arrive at that conclusion.

I'd think that the going too far is dismembering a living human being.

An Anonymous Foxy's picture

> It's 'going too far' to

> It's 'going too far' to display a poster with the actual results of an abortion? I'd like to know how you arrive at that conclusion.

It's going to far to use the results of late-term abortions to argue against early (arbitrarily defined here as within the first 1-2 months) term abortions and emergency contraceptives. By and large, the pro-life side of the debate has been unwilling to compromise on any point past conception (and in some cases, any point before), but on the pro-choice side, many people feel there's a big difference between an abortion in the early part of the first trimester and in the late part of the last trimester. Consequently, we get irked when people arguing against the entire she-bang only show pictures of the latter, while arguing against both.

An Anonymous Foxy's picture

I think this ad is disgusting

Besides whether abortion is right or wrong, this ad is just gross and completely insensitive to women. When I drove by this ad I felt physically nautious. I mean why not just take the ad one step further and have a picture of an aborted fetus at the end of the hanger? I mean it is just completely out of line, and I am not usually a person to react, but I just can not deal with this one.
OH AND WHAT DOES THIS ACTUALLY HAVE TO DO WITH STORAGE SPACE?
Don't people who write this stuff need to be challenged to be a little more creative then just making this type of crap?

It's there to make people think

I'm a woman, and I'm not offended by this ad. In fact, I am relieved that it has called further attention to our reproductive rights being suppressed.

As I have noticed, most "Pro-Lifers" have the misconceived notion that "Pro-Choicers" are "Pro-Abortion". It's not like we're parading around telling women to have an abortion, we're merely campaigning for safe practices SHOULD the need for an abortion arise.

Let's face it, if women want to get one, they're going to get one whether you like it or not. Who are we to prohibit them from choosing, and putting them into danger?

But I digress... If you're offended by this ad, don't use their services.

Manhattan Mini Soul

I have a better ad for them, in fact it may save a life or two! Your Closet Space is Shrinking as Fast as that Last Breadth of an Unborn American Child - Let us Help You! Maybe we can then remove the hanger and have a smiling face of a child - Choosing Life is a far better choice for all - Mini storage seems to have a mini soul -

An Anonymous Foxy's picture

dear DKein

fair enough, what a noble sentiment... GO out and take those unwanted children into your home. Go, spread your message of love and rescue the child beaten to death by their 12 year old parents, covered in scars from their head to their feet because their foster parent poured an entire pan of boiling pasta water over their 2 year old body. Go and take every single 15 month old left alone in an apartment with no food or heat for 2 days while their mother takes their 7 year old brother to the crack house. Go, DKlein, go and find a loving, supportive home for every (every single invisible American child) unwanted child and then come back to these miniature souled persons you acuse of heartlessness and wave your stick of indignation.

this ad rocks

Coupling a political message with an advertisement is probably the best use of billboard space I can think of.

Especially when it's pro-woman.

An Anonymous Foxy's picture

Is it really so difficult

Is it really so difficult for you "pro-choice" advocates to separate arguments? Whining about such things as lack of social programs and "fascism wrapped in a cross" when attempting to think about the "abortion" (read: killing) of a fetus is intellectually disingenuous. It's a very simple question: do you support ending the life of a human? If you do, apparently it is OK to cloak that in the euphemism of "pro choice."
Also, whomever suggested that women who want an abortion would still find a way if it were illegal, could not the same argument be made about murder? It is theoretically impossible to prevent crimes before they occur, but that has never stopped us from banning such activities and seeking retribution from those who break the law.

Should we now expect more ads from other marketers?

Maybe now that Madison Avenue ad agencies will see this ad concept they can take it further... for some national brands. "McDonalds, an Egg McMuffin to help swallow that morning after pill..." ... btw Abortion is Genocide!

An Anonymous Foxy's picture

Launch a campaign to boycott...

Let's show Manhattan Mini Storage the error of their ways. Boycott their services and let everyone know of your opinion. Is your company using their services? Perhaps you can rebid out their contract and move your goods? A permanent ban by people who care about the sanctity of life from conception will certainly leave a mark on their bottom line, one they may not see or feel immediately but, a statement nonetheless.

An Anonymous Foxy's picture

Look like perfect targets to me...

Anyone have any red paint in balloons? That might personalize the message for those that think this is funny or witty. (and I'm scared of you if you think this ad is witty)

ThinkB4Uact's picture

The ad advocates irresponible behavior

The ad advocates irresponible behavior. Let's be honest isn't that what abortion really is? A selfish and convienent decision made to cure a previous bad decision. The inconvienent truth is abortion is nothing less then murder. The phrase "Pro Choice" means the same as "Anti-Life. Of course I pray for those who are having to make that choice and hope they do what is right and for those who take the easy way out I pray they can still sleep at night. Of course it doesn't really matter what we think of this ad. What does God think is the real question.

I'm so OVER this

I'm so OVER this misconception that Pro-choice = PRO abortion. The clue is in the name. I support the right of a person to CHOOSE how to deal with their own bodies.

dupster diving at the abortion clinic

manhattan mini storage ads are fantastic. i'd use their services based on the ads alone, which must really be working since they've been doing these types of ads for years.

it's strange how conservative nuts have absolutely no sense of humor. but beyond the sarcasm lies an interesting inevitability and that is, if the option to choose were to be taken away, people would resort to back-alley abortions and have legal restrictions over their very own bodies. how terrifying would that be? i guess no more terrifying than religious zealots who wish to empose their beliefs on others, even by force. actually, that is truly frightening.

oh, and by the way, an embryo is not technically a baby. fools.
